Modern Times

Musicals started a long time ago but there are still musicals today. Every little and big step for American musicals would lead to what they are today. Today musicals are one of the most entertaining art forms and it is big not only in the U.S. but all over the world. There is the mystery of what lies ahead for the musical theatre. Hits today include Phantom of the Opera, Spring Awakening and Hairspray. Legally Blonde was also recently taken off Broadway but it gave a message that it should not matter what color your hair color is and that you can always be whatever you want to be. Disney Classica such as Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Lion King have also been on and graced the Broadway stage. Rent and Les Mesirables were also big but they are not on the Broadway stage anymore. In 2000 The Producers, Urinetown and Thoroughly Modern Millie came out. The Broadway stage has grown and expanded alot and so has the journey of the American Musical Stage.None of us can say what lies ahead for musical history but we can let our minds imagine what is coming. As Oscar Hammerstein II said "It is nonsense to say what a musical should or should not be. It should be anything it wants to be and if you don't like it, you don't have to go to it. There is only one absoulutley indispensable element that a musical must have. It must have music. And there is only one thing that it has to be. It has to be good."
